Dhonfanu is home for the bitter love story of “Dhonhiyala and Alifulhu” the Maldivian version of “Romeo and Juliet” which took place during 16th Century. It has never been a play for theaters in the Maldives. A dramatic life of a couple, forcing the husband to takeaway his own life.

Mother of the emenine character “Dhonhiyala” is said to be from Dhonfanu, known as “Dhonfanu Aisa”. Dhonfanu is cultrally important island in the history of Maldives. In the past our forefathers have made passageways deep enough to travel through house reef of Dhonfanu named as “Arumaazu Neru” for the royals. It’s an essential part of Dhonfanu history and an attraction to explore.
